  • Our final session tackles the critical topic of legal implications arising from the integration of evolving technologies in the live music sector. As the industry embraces artificial intelligence, virtual reality, and augmented reality, new legal considerations emerge. This session will feature legal experts specializing in the intersection of technology and entertainment law. Session 1: Creative Usages | April 16, 2024 – 12 pm ET | Panelists

  • Anne McKinnon is CEO and cofounder of award-winning platform Ristband, using immersive and gaming technology to supercharge the music industry.
    Anne’s team won the SXSW Audience Award in 2023 for their official hybrid (live & digital) Future x Music event. In January 2023, Anne was recognized by IQ Magazine as one of the live music industry’s most visionary professionals. In 2022, she published the first Report on Diversity in Virtual Worlds. In 2021, her team received a grant from Epic Games in recognition of their work supporting emerging artists and creating new types of live gaming experiences.
    Anne has a unique background spanning gaming, deep tech, media and entertainment. Prior to Ristband, Anne supported emerging technology startups through growth and acquisition. She has also worked with world-class music management, agents, and labels.

  • Adrienne Wong is the Artistic Director of SpiderWebShow and an artist whose work straddles theatrical and digital space. Together with Michael Wheeler and Marcel Stewart she co-curates FOLDA, an annual festival of live digital art in Kingston, ON. Landline, created with Dustin Harvey, toured internationally in English and French. Me On The Map, created with JD Derbyshire, is a show about urban design and ethical decision-making. Adrienne was the inaugural artist in residence for CBC Radio's q. Adrienne is currently pursuing an MFA in Writing at the University of Victoria.   • Lola Baraldi is a creative project manager currently working with MUTEK to facilitate Partnerships and Digital Projects, including the production of the Immersive Collection, the festival’s first Extended Reality (XR) artworks. She is the co-founder of the Montréal chapter of shesaid.so, part of a global network aiming to create opportunities for women, allies and non-binary people working in music. Lola studies Cultural Management and sits on Montréal’s Night Council, a citizen-led group of facilitators for the local night-time economy.

  • Brodie Conley (he/him) is a music industries worker and artist living in Ottawa, ON. He has worked across a variety of areas including research, artist management and community music initiatives, as well as in program and policy development within government. He is currently a researcher with the Center for Music Ecosystems, where he is focused on research on the economic, social and cultural value produced through music and the music industry. In the past, Brodie was an artist manager with Kelp Management, where he supported the careers of multiple Canadian artists (Andy Shauf / Lido Pimienta). He also worked as the Festival Manager for the annual MEGAPHONO Music Festival and Conference, which brought music industry professionals to Ottawa, and provided an opportunity for local and regional artists to expand their reach, cultivate new knowledge and catalyze export opportunities.

Session 2: Workplace Optimization | April 30, 2024 – 12 pm ET | Panelists

  • Joseph Pinho is the CEO and Founder behind MOD (Merch On Demand), a groundbreaking platform transforming how merchandise is run for music artists and bands. He has extensive business expertise from roles in marketing, advertising, events, and sales across various small businesses and startup ventures with a lifelong passion for music. After recognizing a gap in the music industry's merchandising sector, he founded MOD to empower artists at all levels in selling their merchandise independently.

  • Mariel Marshall (she/her) - Interdisciplinary Artist, Tech Entrepreneur, Tandem Experiences & bluemouth inc.
    Mariel Marshall is an interdisciplinary artist and tech entrepreneur with over 15 years of experience in the creative sector. As the co-founder of Tandem Experiences, she is invested in building tech that helps connect people with extraordinary experiences, fostering a thriving arts and culture community. Mariel's expertise lies in AI-powered product development and decision support systems. Holding a BA from York University, she is also a graduate of the devised theatre specialization and a core member of the beloved immersive performance collective, bluemouth inc.

  • Sean Nugent is the Marketing Manager at Side Door and brings experience from various corners of the music industry. A graduate of Humber College's Music Business program, Sean has worked on successful collaborations with SXSW, Folk Alliance International, and other notable organizations. He volunteers as a Juror for FACTOR, MusicNL, and the East Coast Music Association. Sean also freelances as a designer, specializing in artist websites and album artwork.

  • Tarun Nayar is a musician, entrepreneur and community builder based in Vancouver, Canada. Trained formally in Indian Classical Music from the age of 7, Tarun’s involvement in Vancouver’s underground electronic music scene in his early 20s led to the formation of well-known Canadian band Delhi 2 Dublin in 2006. He has since led the band to Glastonbury (UK), Burning Man (US) and almost 2000 other club and festival gigs around the world. Tarun is passionate about creating opportunities in the arts for people of colour. In 2018 he founded 5X Festival, which is now Canada’s largest South Asian youth event. After 6 years as the Executive Director, he now spearheads 5X’s technology interests in partnership with Invoke, a digital products firm based in Vancouver. Together, they have built the Incrowd app, which strives to make arts and culture more accessible. Tarun is an executive board member of the Canadian Live Music Association, a member of FACTOR’s Diversity and Inclusivity Committee, and the leader of the 2019-2022 Music BC Trade Missions to Mumbai.

Session 3: Legal Implications | May 14, 2024 – 12 pm ET | Panelists

  • Michael Duboff is a seasoned Canadian entertainment attorney, deeply embedded in the music, film, and TV spheres.
    Hailing from Winnipeg, his expertise extends throughout Manitoba and Ontario, bridging artistic and corporate worlds.
    With roots as a musician and film industry professional in major cities like Toronto and Vancouver, he's not just a lawyer but a passionate advocate for artists. His diverse background and dedication make him an invaluable ally for the dynamic arts community.

  • Eliane Ellbogen is an intellectual property lawyer at Fasken in Montreal, with a focus on information technology and the creative industries. Ellbogen is often invited to speak on copyright, artificial intelligence, and legal issues in arts, and regularly publishes articles on these topics. She completed her Bachelor of Law with honours at UQÀM. Before becoming a lawyer, Ellbogen founded and directed Eastern Bloc, an internationally-renowned digital art exhibition centre. She continues to be actively involved in the arts community as a board member of various organizations.

  • Matthew Gorman is an entertainment lawyer, advising performers, songwriters, producers, managers, social media influencers, music publishers, record labels, authors, and entertainment/digital businesses and disruptors on all aspects of their careers/businesses. Matt also owns and operates Ocean Town Music, an entertainment company that, among other things, manages multi-platinum producer/songwriter, Mike Sonier (Noah Cyrus, Julia Michaels, Maggie Rogers, The Weeknd, Ruth B., etc.). Matt was very active within the creative arts space long before becoming a lawyer, which helps inform his practice every day. Outside the office, Matt plays drums, piano, and guitar.
